Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Gokhru (Tribulus terrestris) has been used for centuries in Ayurveda and other traditional systems of medicine to support urinary tract health and treat conditions such as urinary tract infections (UTIs), kidney stones, and dysuria. The traditional rationale for its use is based on its reputed diuretic properties, helping to promote urine flow and flush out toxins and pathogens from the urinary tract. Ancient Ayurvedic texts describe gokhru as a "mutrala" (diuretic) and "rasayana" (rejuvenative), often recommended in formulations for urinary disorders. From a scientific perspective, there are a few preclinical studies suggesting that extracts of gokhru may have mild antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and diuretic effects. Some animal studies have shown that gokhru can increase urine output and may reduce markers of inflammation in the urinary tract. However, robust clinical trials in humans specifically examining gokhru’s effectiveness for treating or preventing UTIs are lacking. The available scientific evidence is limited, mostly based on laboratory or animal experiments rather than well-designed human studies. Therefore, while gokhru’s use in UTIs is justified by a strong tradition and plausible pharmacological actions, the overall strength of evidence for efficacy is low, warranting a rating of 2 out of 5.
