Rating (out of 5): 2

Desmodium gangeticum, commonly known as Salparni, is a medicinal plant extensively used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine. Within the Ayurvedic system, it is considered an important ingredient in formulations for treating various ailments, including urinary tract infections (UTIs), due to its reputed diuretic, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties. Ancient texts such as the Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita mention its use in conditions associated with urinary disorders, often as part of polyherbal formulations designed to alleviate burning micturition, urinary retention, and infections. Modern scientific validation for its use specifically in UTIs is minimal. A few in vitro and animal studies have demonstrated that extracts of Desmodium gangeticum possess mild antimicrobial activity against some Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, and some diuretic effects have been observed in animal models. However, these studies are preliminary and generally do not focus on clinically relevant uropathogens or human subjects. There are no robust clinical trials supporting its efficacy for treating or preventing UTIs in humans. In summary, the primary justification for using Desmodium gangeticum in the management of urinary tract infections is based on traditional Ayurvedic practice, with only limited preclinical scientific support. Its role in modern evidence-based medicine for UTIs remains unestablished.
