Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Desmodium is a genus of plants widely used in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Africa, Asia, and South America. In the context of urinary tract infections (UTIs), Desmodium species—such as Desmodium gangeticum and Desmodium adscendens—have been utilized in folk medicine primarily for their purported diuretic and anti-inflammatory properties. Historical records and ethnobotanical surveys document the use of Desmodium leaf, stem, or root decoctions to treat urinary complaints, including infections, stones, and inflammation. However, scientific validation for these uses remains limited. While some laboratory studies indicate that certain Desmodium extracts possess antimicrobial or anti-inflammatory activities, most have not specifically targeted common UTI pathogens or provided robust clinical data in human subjects. As a result, the evidence supporting Desmodium for UTIs is largely anecdotal or based on tradition, rather than rigorous scientific proof. Standardized clinical trials in humans addressing efficacy and safety for UTIs are lacking. Thus, while its use for UTIs is rooted in traditional practice, the evidence base is weak, meriting a low rating.
