Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Cyperus (referring generally to species such as Cyperus rotundus, also known as nutgrass or musta) is used in various traditional medicine systems, including Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), and Unani, to support urinary tract health and treat conditions like urinary tract infections (UTIs). In Ayurveda, Cyperus rotundus is considered to have diuretic and anti-inflammatory properties and is sometimes included in formulations for urinary complaints such as dysuria (painful urination) and infections. However, scientific validation for its efficacy in treating UTIs is lacking. Preclinical studies have shown that Cyperus rotundus extracts possess antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects, but there is little direct evidence demonstrating activity against common UTI pathogens in vivo or in human clinical trials. The traditional use of Cyperus in UTI management is thus primarily based on historical texts and anecdotal reports rather than robust scientific research. As a result, while Cyperus has a long-standing traditional reputation for supporting urinary health, the quality of scientific evidence supporting its use specifically for UTIs is weak, meriting a low evidence rating.
