Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Cynodon dactylon, commonly known as Bermuda grass or "Durva," has a longstanding history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and Unani. In these traditions, its juice and decoctions have been recommended for various urinary problems, including urinary tract infections (UTIs), as a diuretic and cooling agent to promote urinary flow and alleviate burning sensations. The rationale is mainly based on empirical use and observation rather than a defined mechanism of action.

Scientific studies on Cynodon dactylon's efficacy for UTIs are limited. Some laboratory research has demonstrated mild antibacterial activity against certain uropathogens in vitro, and there are reports of its diuretic effects in animal models. However, there is a lack of robust clinical trials or comprehensive pharmacological studies directly confirming its efficacy in treating or preventing UTIs in humans. Most of the support for its use is thus rooted in traditional practice, with minimal scientific corroboration. The overall evidence for its effectiveness and safety in UTIs should be regarded as preliminary, and more rigorous clinical research is needed to validate traditional claims.
