Cubebs (Piper cubeba), also known as tailed pepper, has a long history of use in traditional medicine, particularly in Ayurvedic and Unani systems. It has been employed for various ailments, including urinary tract infections (UTIs), primarily because of its reputed diuretic, antiseptic, and anti-inflammatory properties. Historical texts and herbal pharmacopeias from the Middle Ages through the 19th century mention cubebs as a remedy for genitourinary disorders, such as urethritis, cystitis, and gonorrhea. The dried berries were often prescribed to relieve urinary tract discomfort and promote urine flow, with some sources suggesting their essential oils have mild antimicrobial effects.

However, modern scientific evidence for cubebs’ efficacy against UTIs is sparse. Very few contemporary studies have rigorously evaluated its antimicrobial activity against typical UTI pathogens or its clinical effectiveness in humans. Some in vitro studies indicate cubeb oil may inhibit the growth of certain bacteria, but these findings are preliminary and not directly validated in clinical settings. Therefore, the use of cubebs for UTIs is supported primarily by traditional use rather than robust scientific validation. Current medical guidelines do not recommend cubebs as a standard treatment for UTIs, and more research is needed to substantiate its efficacy and safety for this purpose.
