Evidence supporting the use of: Bog Bilberry
For the health condition: Urinary Tract Infections
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Bog Bilberry (Vaccinium uliginosum) has a history of use in traditional medicine, particularly in parts of Europe and Asia, for various ailments including urinary tract health. Folk remedies have sometimes used berries and leaves of related Vaccinium species in teas or extracts for urinary tract infections (UTIs), though Bog Bilberry itself is less commonly cited than others like cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon) or bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus). The rationale in traditional herbalism is often based on the plant’s purported diuretic and antimicrobial properties, which are believed to help "cleanse" the urinary system. However, there is minimal direct scientific research specifically on Bog Bilberry for UTIs. Most scientific literature focuses on cranberry and its proanthocyanidins, which have demonstrated some efficacy in reducing UTI risk, but these findings cannot be directly extrapolated to Bog Bilberry. No robust clinical trials or experimental studies have validated the use of Bog Bilberry for UTI prevention or treatment. Therefore, while its use is justified by traditional herbal practices, there is a lack of scientific validation, and the evidence supporting its efficacy is very limited.
