Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Berberis species, particularly Berberis vulgaris (commonly known as barberry), have a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and various folk traditions. These plants have been used to address a variety of ailments, including urinary tract infections (UTIs). The traditional use is largely attributed to the presence of isoquinoline alkaloids such as berberine, which have been noted for their antimicrobial properties in vitro. Historically, barberry extracts were administered to alleviate symptoms associated with urinary discomfort, promote urine flow, and generally support urinary tract health. Scientific studies supporting the use of Berberis or berberine specifically for UTIs in humans are limited and generally of low quality. While some in vitro research demonstrates that berberine possesses antibacterial activity against common uropathogens (such as E. coli), there is a lack of robust clinical trials confirming its efficacy for treating UTIs in humans. The evidence that does exist mainly includes laboratory studies and animal models, which are not sufficient to guide clinical use. Therefore, while the traditional use of Berberis for urinary tract support is well documented, scientific validation remains limited, and further high-quality research is needed to establish its clinical effectiveness and safety for this indication.
