Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Bauhinia variegata, commonly known as Kachnar, has roots in traditional medicine systems, including Ayurveda and Unani, where it has been used to treat a variety of conditions, including urinary tract infections (UTIs). Historical texts and ethnobotanical records mention its use as a diuretic and for its purported antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, which are believed to help in urinary disorders. However, the evidence supporting its efficacy for UTIs is mainly anecdotal and based on traditional practice rather than rigorous scientific validation.

There are a few preliminary scientific studies investigating the antimicrobial activities of extracts from Bauhinia variegata, but these are generally in vitro (test tube) experiments and not specific to urinary pathogens relevant in humans, nor are they clinical trials in people with UTIs. No robust, peer-reviewed clinical studies have established its effectiveness or safety for treating UTIs. As such, while the use of Bauhinia variegata for UTIs is justified by its traditional application, it cannot be recommended based on current scientific evidence, and the overall level of evidence is low.
