Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Agave has been traditionally used in some cultures, particularly in Mexico and Central America, for its medicinal properties, including as a remedy for urinary tract issues. Folk medicine practices have employed agave sap or extracts as diuretics and for purported antimicrobial effects, which are believed to help "cleanse" the urinary tract and alleviate symptoms associated with urinary tract infections (UTIs). Historical records and ethnobotanical surveys document agave’s use for a variety of ailments, including wounds, digestive complaints, and urinary tract discomforts. However, there is minimal scientific research specifically investigating agave’s efficacy in treating or preventing UTIs. The plant contains certain saponins and fructans, which have shown some antimicrobial activity in laboratory settings, but there are no well-designed clinical trials or robust pharmacological studies that confirm its benefit for UTIs in humans. Thus, while agave’s use for urinary tract health is rooted in tradition, current scientific evidence supporting its effectiveness for UTIs is very limited.
