For the health condition: Urinary Tract Infections
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Adzuki bean (Vigna angularis) has a long history of use in traditional East Asian medicine, particularly in China and Japan, where it is believed to promote urinary tract health and act as a mild diuretic. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), adzuki beans are thought to "clear heat" and "eliminate dampness," which are conceptual frameworks sometimes associated with conditions like urinary tract infections (UTIs). They have been included in various herbal formulations intended to support kidney and bladder function and to promote urination. However, these uses are grounded primarily in traditional beliefs and anecdotal reports rather than rigorous scientific investigation. Currently, there are no high-quality clinical studies or strong laboratory research specifically demonstrating that adzuki beans can prevent or treat UTIs in humans. While adzuki beans are nutritious and contain antioxidants and fiber, there is insufficient scientific evidence to support their use as a treatment for UTIs. Some laboratory studies have explored the general antimicrobial or anti-inflammatory properties of beans and legumes, but these findings do not directly translate to efficacy against urinary tract infections in clinical settings. Thus, while adzuki beans are traditionally used for urinary health, scientific validation for this specific application is minimal.
