Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Achyranthes, particularly Achyranthes aspera, has been traditionally used in various systems of medicine, such as Ayurveda and folk medicine, for the management of urinary tract ailments, including urinary tract infections (UTIs). Traditional texts and ethnobotanical surveys frequently mention its use as a diuretic and for alleviating symptoms related to urinary difficulties. The plant is believed to promote urine flow and reduce inflammation of the urinary tract, which may indirectly help with UTIs. However, while these uses are well-documented in historical and ethnomedicinal literature, robust clinical or laboratory evidence supporting its efficacy specifically against the pathogens responsible for UTIs is limited. Some preliminary phytochemical and antimicrobial studies suggest mild antibacterial activity of Achyranthes extracts, but these are generally not specific to common UTI-causing organisms, nor are they conducted in human subjects. Therefore, its use for UTIs is primarily justified by tradition, with only modest scientific support from in vitro studies and no high-quality clinical trials confirming efficacy. The overall evidence rating, considering the lack of rigorous modern validation, is low.
