Yin Chen (Artemisia capillaris) is primarily used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for its effects on the liver, gallbladder, and as a remedy for jaundice and damp-heat conditions. Traditionally, it is not directly classified as a urinary system tonic, but its actions in clearing "dampness" and promoting urination have led to its inclusion in formulas aimed at supporting urinary health, especially when symptoms overlap with damp-heat in the lower burner (pelvis/urinary tract). Historical TCM texts often reference Yin Chen in conjunction with other herbs to relieve symptoms such as difficult urination, edema, and urinary tract inflammation, attributing these effects to its ability to clear heat and promote the flow of fluids.

From a modern scientific perspective, limited studies suggest diuretic and anti-inflammatory properties for Artemisia capillaris extracts. However, high-quality clinical evidence for its use specifically in supporting the urinary system in humans is lacking. Most scientific research focuses on its hepatoprotective and anti-cholestatic effects rather than direct benefits to the urinary tract.
