William's Elder, more commonly known as Sambucus nigra or elderberry, has a long history of traditional use in herbal medicine. While elderberry is best known for its use in supporting immune health and treating colds and flu, traditional herbalists have at times used various parts of the elder plant (flowers, berries, and even bark) for urinary issues, such as promoting diuresis (increased urine flow) and alleviating minor urinary tract discomfort. However, these uses are not as prominent or well-documented as its applications for respiratory ailments. There is little to no high-quality scientific evidence specifically validating elderberry’s effectiveness for supporting the urinary system. The existing evidence is largely anecdotal or based on traditional herbal monographs rather than clinical trials. Some herbal texts reference the diuretic properties of elder flowers and berries, but rigorous human studies are lacking.
