Sheep's sorrel (Rumex acetosella) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly in European and North American folk practices. Traditionally, sheep's sorrel has been used as a diuretic, which means it was believed to help promote the flow of urine and thus support urinary tract health. Folk remedies have used it for conditions such as urinary tract infections, gravel, and kidney stones. The use of sheep's sorrel in the famous “Essiac” herbal formula, which was popularized in the early 20th century for various health purposes (including as a urinary tonic), further cemented its reputation in traditional herbalism.

However, there is limited scientific research specifically validating sheep's sorrel for urinary system support. Most of the evidence is anecdotal or based on traditional knowledge, with only a few laboratory studies investigating its phytochemical profile (including flavonoids and oxalates) and potential antioxidant properties. These do not directly confirm benefits to the urinary system in humans. Therefore, while sheep's sorrel is used traditionally for urinary health, scientific validation is lacking.
