Prickly ash (Zanthoxylum americanum and related species) has been used in traditional herbal medicine, particularly by Native American and early Western herbal practitioners, for a variety of ailments, including those affecting the urinary system. Historically, prickly ash bark and berries were used as a “stimulating” remedy, believed to improve circulation, digestion, and sometimes to address “cold” or stagnant conditions in the urinary tract. It was occasionally included in formulas intended to support kidney or bladder function, usually in combination with other herbs. However, the evidence for these uses is largely anecdotal and based on traditional practice rather than rigorous scientific investigation.

Contemporary herbal literature sometimes mentions prickly ash as a "supportive" herb for the urinary system, but there are no well-designed clinical trials or substantial pharmacological studies that demonstrate a direct benefit of prickly ash for urinary health. Most modern sources focus on its use for digestive stimulation and circulatory support.
