Yerba mate (Ilex paraguariensis), commonly known as "mate," has a longstanding history of use in South American traditional medicine, including as a diuretic to support urinary system health. Traditionally, indigenous populations and local healers have prepared mate infusions to promote urination and relieve symptoms associated with mild urinary discomfort, such as water retention. The diuretic effects are attributed in part to mate’s caffeine content and other xanthines, which are known to increase urine output.
Despite this traditional use, scientific evidence specifically investigating mate’s effects on the urinary system is limited. Some animal and small human studies have demonstrated a mild diuretic action, mostly associated with its caffeine content, which is a well-established mild diuretic. However, there is a lack of robust clinical trials directly linking mate consumption to significant benefits for urinary tract health or the prevention/treatment of urinary tract infections. The majority of available data do not specifically address the overall support of the urinary system beyond the general diuretic effect. Therefore, while traditional use is well-documented, scientific validation remains modest and indirect.
