Flower pollen extract, particularly from rye grass (Secale cereale), has been studied for its potential benefits in supporting the urinary system, especially in relation to prostate health and lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) in men. Several clinical trials and systematic reviews have evaluated its efficacy in managing symptoms associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), such as urinary frequency, urgency, and nocturia. Notably, a 1990 double-blind, placebo-controlled study published in British Journal of Urology reported improvements in urinary flow and reduction of residual urine in men taking flower pollen extract compared to placebo. A 2000 Cochrane review concluded that pollen extract may modestly improve overall urinary symptoms and quality of life, though the number and size of studies are limited and some were of moderate methodological quality.

Mechanistically, flower pollen extract is thought to exert anti-inflammatory effects and may help relax urethral and prostate tissue, thereby easing urinary flow. The evidence base is stronger for male urinary dysfunction associated with prostate issues and less established for other urinary system conditions or for use in women. While not universally recommended in clinical guidelines, flower pollen extract is recognized in some European countries as a phytotherapeutic option for BPH-related LUTS. Overall, scientific evidence supports a moderate but not definitive benefit, and more large-scale, high-quality trials are needed.
