Eupatorium, a genus with several species such as Eupatorium purpureum (commonly known as gravel root or Joe Pye weed), has a long history of traditional use in supporting the urinary system. In North American indigenous herbal medicine and early Western herbalism, Eupatorium species were used as diuretics and to help manage conditions such as kidney stones, urinary tract infections, and other urinary complaints. The common name "gravel root" refers to its reputed ability to help expel "gravel" (small stones) from the urinary tract.

Despite its established traditional use, scientific evidence supporting the efficacy or mechanism of Eupatorium for urinary health is limited. There are few well-conducted clinical studies, and most available research consists of in vitro or animal studies, which do not provide robust evidence for human use. Some phytochemical analyses have identified compounds such as flavonoids and sesquiterpene lactones that might have mild diuretic or anti-inflammatory effects, but their relevance to urinary health in humans remains largely unproven.
