Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) has a long history of traditional use as a diuretic, often referred to as "piss-a-bed" in folklore, reflecting its reputation for promoting urination and supporting the urinary system. Modern scientific research has provided some support for these traditional claims. Several studies have demonstrated that dandelion leaf extract can increase urine output in humans and animals, likely due to its high potassium content and other bioactive compounds such as flavonoids and sesquiterpene lactones. A small human study published in 2009 found that a dandelion leaf extract increased the frequency and excretion ratio of urination over a short period following ingestion. Additionally, dandelion has been shown in laboratory studies to possess anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, which could be beneficial for urinary tract health, although direct clinical evidence for these effects in humans is limited.

However, while these preliminary results are promising, larger and more rigorous clinical trials are needed to fully establish efficacy and safety for urinary system support. The current body of evidence justifies a moderate rating, as the scientific validation is not yet robust but is supported by both traditional use and some early clinical findings.
