However, beyond its traditional use, there is emerging scientific evidence to suggest potential benefits for ulcer management, particularly gastric ulcers.
Several preclinical studies have explored the gastroprotective effects of purslane extracts in animal models. For example, research published in Phytotherapy Research (2010) demonstrated that purslane extract significantly reduced gastric ulceration in rats induced by ethanol and indomethacin. The mechanisms proposed include purslane's antioxidant activity, ability to reduce gastric acid secretion, and promotion of mucosal defense by enhancing mucus production and reducing inflammation.
