Chestnut, which commonly refers to either the sweet chestnut (Castanea sativa) or horse chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum), has a history of traditional use in various folk medicine systems. For ulcers, especially gastric or peptic ulcers, the use of chestnut is primarily rooted in traditional medicine rather than strong scientific evidence. Historical texts and ethnobotanical records indicate that chestnut leaves, bark, or nuts were sometimes used in decoctions or teas to soothe digestive complaints, including ulcers and gastritis. The rationale was often based on the presence of tannins, which have astringent properties and were believed to reduce inflammation and promote healing of mucous membranes. However, there is minimal clinical research specifically validating chestnut’s efficacy for ulcer treatment in humans. Most of the scientific studies focus on horse chestnut’s vascular benefits (for varicose veins and chronic venous insufficiency) or the nutritional value of sweet chestnut nuts, rather than direct anti-ulcer effects. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest that certain polyphenols and antioxidants in chestnut may have protective effects on gastric mucosa, but these findings are preliminary. Overall, while there is a traditional basis for chestnut’s use in ulcer management, robust scientific data is lacking, and the evidence supporting its effectiveness is limited.
