Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Buckthorn Plantain (Plantago afra or Plantago psyllium), also known as psyllium, has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine for a variety of gastrointestinal issues, including ulcers. In folk medicine, preparations of plantain seeds and sometimes leaves were used to soothe irritation and inflammation of the digestive tract, and believed to promote healing of ulcers, particularly peptic ulcers. The rationale in tradition likely comes from plantain’s mucilaginous properties: when mixed with water, the seeds form a gel-like mass that can coat mucous membranes, potentially providing a protective barrier and reducing irritation. However, scientific evidence specifically supporting the use of Buckthorn Plantain for the treatment or support of ulcers is limited. Most modern research on psyllium focuses on its laxative effects and cholesterol-lowering properties rather than on ulcer healing. There are a few animal studies suggesting that mucilaginous plants may have a mild protective effect on gastric lining, but well-controlled clinical trials in humans are lacking. Therefore, the use of Buckthorn Plantain for ulcers remains primarily rooted in traditional practice, with only weak scientific support and no robust clinical data.
