Evidence supporting the use of: Bacopasides
For the health condition: Ulcers
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Bacopasides are a group of saponins found in the medicinal plant Bacopa monnieri, commonly known as Brahmi. While Bacopa monnieri has a long history of traditional use in Ayurveda for cognitive enhancement, its application for ulcers is supported primarily by preclinical scientific studies rather than traditional usage. Several animal studies have investigated the gastroprotective effects of bacopasides and extracts of Bacopa monnieri. For example, research using rat models has shown that extracts of the plant can reduce gastric ulceration induced by various agents, possibly through antioxidative mechanisms, enhancement of mucosal defense, and reduction of gastric acidity (PubMed ID: 23156887). The anti-ulcer effect is thought to be linked to the antioxidant and cytoprotective properties of bacopasides, which may help strengthen the gastric mucosal barrier and reduce inflammation. However, this evidence is limited to animal and in vitro studies; as of June 2024, there are no well-designed clinical trials in humans directly supporting the use of bacopasides or Bacopa monnieri for the treatment or prevention of ulcers. Thus, while there is some preliminary scientific rationale, it is not robustly validated in humans, and the efficacy and safety for this indication remain uncertain.
