Alfalfa (Medicago sativa) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine for a variety of ailments, including digestive issues such as ulcers. Folk medicine in some cultures regarded alfalfa as a soothing agent for the digestive tract, likely due to its high content of vitamins, minerals, and fiber. In particular, proponents have claimed that the mucilaginous (gel-like) components of alfalfa can help coat and protect the stomach lining, potentially providing relief from ulcer irritation.

However, the evidence supporting alfalfa's effectiveness for ulcers is limited to anecdotal and traditional use. There are very few, if any, clinical studies or rigorous scientific investigations that directly assess alfalfa’s impact on gastric or peptic ulcers in humans. Some animal studies have suggested that fiber-rich diets, or diets containing certain phytochemicals (which alfalfa possesses), may have protective effects on the gastric mucosa, but these findings are not specific to alfalfa and cannot be directly extrapolated to its use in treating ulcers in humans.

In summary, alfalfa’s use for ulcer support is rooted primarily in traditional herbal practice, with minimal scientific validation. Until more robust human studies are conducted, its efficacy for this condition should be considered unproven and mainly of historical interest.
