3-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)prop-2-enoic acid is more commonly known as ferulic acid, a phenolic compound found in various plants. There is some scientific evidence indicating a potential role for ferulic acid in supporting or treating ulcers, though this evidence is limited primarily to in vitro and animal model studies rather than large-scale human clinical trials.
Several experimental studies have demonstrated that ferulic acid possesses antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which may contribute to its gastroprotective effects. In rodent models, administration of ferulic acid has been shown to reduce the formation of gastric ulcers induced by agents such as ethanol or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). The proposed mechanisms include enhancing mucosal defense, increasing antioxidant enzyme activity, and reducing oxidative damage to gastric tissues. For example, a study published in "Life Sciences" (2016) reported that ferulic acid significantly attenuated ulcer formation and oxidative stress in rat gastric tissue.
However, while these results are promising, direct evidence in humans is lacking. There are currently no well-controlled clinical trials that corroborate the efficacy or safety of ferulic acid for ulcer prevention or treatment in humans. Thus, while the use of ferulic acid for ulcers has some scientific rationale based on preclinical data, its translation to human clinical practice remains unproven and should be approached cautiously.
