Evidence supporting the use of: Baliospermum
For the health condition: Ulcerations (external)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Baliospermum montanum is traditionally used in Ayurvedic and other traditional Indian medical systems for the management of external ulcerations and wounds. The plant’s roots and leaves are often applied as poultices or pastes to the affected area. Classical Ayurvedic texts refer to its application for skin diseases, ulcers, and chronic wounds, attributing to it cleansing and healing properties. While these uses are well-documented in ethnobotanical and Ayurvedic literature, there is limited scientific validation for its efficacy specifically in treating external ulcerations. Some preliminary pharmacological studies suggest that Baliospermum montanum extracts possess antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, which could theoretically contribute to wound healing and the management of ulcers. However, these studies are limited in scope and are mostly preclinical, with little direct clinical evidence. Therefore, the use of Baliospermum for external ulcerations is primarily justified by traditional use, with only modest scientific support at this time.
