Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Andrographis paniculata is a medicinal plant widely used in traditional Asian medicine, particularly in Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Historically, it has been employed for its purported "bitter tonic" properties and as a remedy for various infections, including respiratory illnesses. In some traditional medical texts and ethnobotanical surveys, Andrographis is mentioned as a supportive agent in the management of tuberculosis (TB), often as part of complex herbal formulas rather than as a standalone treatment.
However, scientific evidence supporting the efficacy of Andrographis specifically for tuberculosis is extremely limited. A few in vitro and animal studies have reported some antimycobacterial and immunomodulatory effects of certain Andrographis constituents, notably andrographolide. These preclinical findings suggest the herb may have some activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis, but the data are preliminary and have not translated into robust clinical research. To date, there are no high-quality clinical trials demonstrating that Andrographis is effective or safe as a treatment or adjunct for tuberculosis in humans.
In summary, the use of Andrographis for supporting tuberculosis management is based on traditional practice, with minimal scientific evidence. It should not replace standard anti-tubercular therapy. Further research is required to clarify its potential role, if any, in TB care.
