Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Walnut oil has some scientific evidence supporting its use in improving lipid profiles, including potentially lowering triglyceride levels. Walnuts are rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids—especially alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), a plant-based omega-3 fatty acid. Several clinical studies have evaluated the effects of walnut consumption and, to a lesser extent, walnut oil on cardiovascular risk factors. For example, a randomized controlled trial published in Metabolism (2005) showed that including walnuts or walnut oil in the diet of hypercholesterolemic subjects improved endothelial function and reduced some lipid parameters, though the reduction in triglycerides was modest. Another study in Nutrition, Metabolism & Cardiovascular Diseases (2014) found that walnut oil supplementation led to a small but significant decrease in triglyceride levels in healthy adults. The mechanism is believed to involve the substitution of saturated fats with polyunsaturated fats and the anti-inflammatory effects of ALA. However, the evidence is not as robust or consistent as for fish oil (EPA/DHA), and some studies show only modest benefits or no significant effect on triglycerides. Overall, while there is scientific support for walnut oil’s positive impact on lipid profiles, its specific effect on high triglycerides is moderate and not universally observed.
