Ursane-type triterpenoids, a class of naturally occurring compounds found in various medicinal plants (notably Centella asiatica and Aralia species), have been investigated for their potential lipid-lowering effects, including reduction of serum triglycerides. Scientific studies, primarily in animal models and in vitro, suggest that ursane-type triterpenoids such as ursolic acid and asiatic acid may modulate lipid metabolism. Proposed mechanisms include inhibition of lipogenesis, enhancement of fatty acid oxidation, and modulation of PPAR (peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor) pathways involved in lipid homeostasis. Some rodent studies have demonstrated significant decreases in plasma triglycerides following administration of ursolic acid, with concurrent improvements in other lipid parameters and markers of metabolic syndrome. However, clinical evidence in humans is limited, with only a few small-scale trials or observational studies suggesting potential triglyceride-lowering effects. Most human data come from trials on mixed triterpenoid extracts or traditional herbal preparations rather than isolated ursane-type triterpenoids. While these early findings are promising, they are insufficient for clear clinical recommendations. Overall, while there is scientific rationale and preclinical evidence supporting the use of ursane-type triterpenoids for high triglycerides, robust human trials are lacking, placing the evidence strength at moderate (3/5).
