Trans-pterostilbene is a naturally occurring polyphenol structurally related to resveratrol, found in small quantities in blueberries and Pterocarpus marsupium heartwood. Its use to support or treat high triglycerides is primarily based on scientific studies rather than traditional medicine. Preclinical animal studies and a limited number of human clinical trials have examined its effects on lipid profiles, including triglycerides. Pterostilbene appears to activate peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPAR-α) and AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), both of which are involved in lipid metabolism and can enhance the breakdown of triglycerides. Several small-scale human studies have reported that supplementation with pterostilbene can lead to reductions in blood triglyceride levels, along with improvements in other lipid parameters such as LDL and HDL cholesterol. For example, a 2012 double-blind, placebo-controlled study (Riche et al., 2012) found that pterostilbene supplementation (100-250 mg daily) for 6-8 weeks resulted in a significant decrease in triglycerides compared to placebo. However, the overall number of clinical trials is small, sample sizes are limited, and some studies have mixed results or are confounded by co-administration with other ingredients. In summary, there is preliminary scientific evidence supporting the use of trans-pterostilbene for lowering triglycerides, primarily from animal studies and early-phase human trials. However, the evidence is not robust enough for widespread clinical endorsement, and larger, high-quality studies are needed to confirm its efficacy and safety for this purpose.
