Thai kudzu (Pueraria mirifica or related Pueraria species) has been studied for its potential effects on lipid profiles, including triglyceride levels. The use of kudzu root to support cardiovascular health—including lowering triglycerides—has roots in traditional medicine, but more recently, scientific investigations have assessed its bioactive isoflavones (such as puerarin, daidzein, and genistein) for metabolic effects.

Animal studies, including those using rat models of hyperlipidemia, have demonstrated that extracts from kudzu root may reduce serum triglyceride levels, possibly by modulating lipid metabolism pathways or improving insulin sensitivity. For example, a 2009 study published in the journal Phytomedicine found that kudzu root extract lowered triglyceride and total cholesterol levels in rats.

Human data, however, are limited, and most clinical research has focused on other aspects of Pueraria mirifica (such as menopausal symptoms). A few small clinical trials and observational studies suggest possible lipid-lowering benefits, but the evidence is not robust, and sample sizes are often too small to draw definitive conclusions. The proposed mechanisms involve the antioxidant and estrogenic activities of isoflavones, which may influence lipid metabolism.

In summary, while there is some preliminary scientific evidence—mainly from animal studies—supporting the use of Thai kudzu for high triglycerides, well-designed human trials are lacking. The current evidence base rates a 2 out of 5 for scientific support.
