The scientific support for its use primarily comes from its fatty acid composition—sunflower oil is high in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), especially linoleic acid. Clinical studies have found that replacing saturated fats in the diet with PUFAs can help lower total cholesterol and triglyceride levels. For example, a meta-analysis published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (2011) reported that consuming vegetable oils rich in PUFAs, such as sunflower oil, was associated with modest reductions in triglyceride concentrations compared to diets high in saturated fats.

However, the effect size is moderate, and sunflower oil should be considered as part of an overall dietary pattern aimed at improving lipid profiles. Some studies suggest that diets rich in omega-6 PUFAs (like those in sunflower oil) may lower triglycerides but could also have complex effects on inflammation and cardiovascular risk, depending on the balance with omega-3 fatty acids. There is little traditional use of sunflower specifically for hypertriglyceridemia; its application is rooted in modern nutritional science.
