Sterols (specifically plant sterols and stanols) are primarily recognized for their cholesterol-lowering properties, but there is some scientific evidence regarding their effects on triglyceride levels as well. Plant sterols work by reducing the absorption of cholesterol in the intestine, leading to lower LDL cholesterol. Several clinical studies and meta-analyses have investigated whether sterol supplementation also affects triglyceride levels. The evidence suggests that while plant sterols can modestly lower triglyceride concentrations, the effect is generally mild and more pronounced in individuals with elevated baseline triglyceride levels (hypertriglyceridemia). For example, a 2011 meta-analysis published in the "Journal of Nutrition" found that plant sterol and stanol supplementation was associated with a reduction in triglyceride levels, with an average decrease of about 6-9% in individuals with high triglycerides.

Despite these findings, the triglyceride-lowering effect is not as substantial or consistent as the LDL cholesterol-lowering effect, and sterols are not typically recommended as a primary therapy for high triglycerides. The clinical relevance of this modest reduction remains uncertain, and most guidelines still emphasize dietary and lifestyle modification or medication (such as fibrates or omega-3 fatty acids) for significant hypertriglyceridemia.
