Schisandrin, a lignan compound derived from the fruit of Schisandra chinensis, has been investigated for various pharmacological effects, including lipid metabolism regulation. Several preclinical studies (mostly in animal models) suggest that Schisandrin and extracts of Schisandra chinensis may lower serum triglyceride levels. The proposed mechanisms include enhancement of hepatic mitochondrial function, upregulation of lipid metabolism-related enzymes, and antioxidant activity, which may collectively contribute to reduced triglyceride synthesis and increased fatty acid oxidation.
For example, a study published in Biological & Pharmaceutical Bulletin (2008) reported that Schisandrin administration in hyperlipidemic rats led to significant reductions in serum triglyceride and cholesterol levels. Another animal study in Food & Function (2013) found that Schisandrin B decreased plasma triglycerides and improved lipid profiles via modulation of lipid metabolic pathways. However, these effects have not been robustly validated in human clinical trials, and the evidence is limited to animal and in vitro experiments.
Traditional Chinese Medicine has used Schisandra chinensis fruits for liver health and vitality, but not specifically for hypertriglyceridemia. Therefore, while there is some scientific evidence at the preclinical level, the overall quality and quantity of evidence for Schisandrin as a triglyceride-lowering agent in humans is modest (rated 2/5), and further clinical research is needed before it can be recommended for this purpose.
