Quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa) has scientific backing for its potential to support the management of elevated triglyceride levels. Several clinical studies and animal experiments have investigated the effects of quinoa consumption on lipid profiles. Quinoa is a whole grain rich in dietary fiber, polyunsaturated fatty acids (notably alpha-linolenic acid), and various phytochemicals such as saponins and flavonoids, all of which are believed to contribute to cardiovascular benefits.

Randomized controlled trials in humans have shown that incorporating quinoa into the diet can lead to modest reductions in serum triglyceride concentrations. For example, a study published in the "Journal of Food Science and Technology" (2017) found that individuals with overweight or obesity who consumed quinoa daily for 12 weeks experienced significant reductions in triglyceride levels compared to controls. Animal studies corroborate these findings, suggesting mechanisms such as improved lipid metabolism, decreased hepatic fat accumulation, and increased fecal excretion of bile acids.

While the body of evidence is still emerging and some studies have limitations such as small sample sizes or short durations, the results are promising. Quinoa’s triglyceride-lowering effect appears to be due to its high fiber content (which can reduce lipid absorption), its low glycemic index, and its content of bioactive compounds.
