Quercetin, a flavonoid found in many fruits and vegetables, has been studied for its potential effects on lipid metabolism, including triglyceride levels. Several animal studies have suggested that quercetin supplementation can lower serum triglycerides, possibly by modulating pathways involved in lipid synthesis and breakdown. These effects have prompted interest in its use as a natural agent to support cardiovascular health, particularly in individuals with dyslipidemia or metabolic syndrome.

Human evidence, however, is limited and somewhat inconsistent. A small number of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in humans have explored quercetin’s impact on blood lipids. Some studies report modest reductions in triglyceride levels, especially in populations with metabolic disturbances, while others show no significant effect. A 2016 meta-analysis of RCTs noted that quercetin supplementation did not significantly affect triglyceride levels overall, but subgroup analyses suggested greater benefit in individuals with higher baseline triglycerides or other risk factors. Mechanistically, quercetin may reduce triglyceride synthesis in the liver and enhance fatty acid oxidation.

In summary, while preclinical and some clinical data hint at a potential triglyceride-lowering effect, the overall quality and consistency of human research are not sufficient to strongly recommend quercetin for this purpose. More large-scale and well-controlled human studies are needed to validate its efficacy. Thus, the evidence supporting quercetin’s use for high triglycerides is scientific in nature but currently weak to moderate.
