Punicalagins are polyphenolic compounds primarily found in pomegranate (Punica granatum) and are recognized for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Several scientific studies have explored the effects of pomegranate extracts, which contain punicalagins, on lipid profiles, including triglyceride levels. Some small randomized controlled trials and animal studies have shown that pomegranate juice or extracts may help lower serum triglycerides, possibly by improving lipid metabolism and reducing oxidative stress associated with dyslipidemia. For example, a few human studies reported modest reductions in triglyceride levels in participants consuming pomegranate juice or extracts, but these studies often used whole juice or broad extracts rather than isolated punicalagins, making it difficult to attribute the effect specifically to punicalagins. Moreover, the magnitude of triglyceride reduction was generally small and, in some cases, not statistically significant.
Systematic reviews and meta-analyses on pomegranate supplementation have found inconsistent results, with some showing mild improvements in lipid parameters and others showing no significant effect. The direct evidence for punicalagins alone is limited, as most research has focused on whole pomegranate products. Therefore, while there is some scientific rationale and limited clinical evidence suggesting a potential benefit, the overall quality and quantity of evidence supporting the use of punicalagins specifically for high triglycerides is weak and not conclusive. More rigorous, targeted studies are needed to clarify their efficacy.
