Phospholipids, such as phosphatidylcholine (found in lecithin), have been investigated for their potential to modulate lipid metabolism, including effects on high triglyceride levels. Some clinical and preclinical studies suggest that certain phospholipids may help reduce serum triglycerides, likely by enhancing lipid export from the liver and improving lipid transport via lipoproteins. For example, soy-derived phosphatidylcholine supplementation has shown modest triglyceride-lowering effects in some human trials, though results are inconsistent and the effect size is generally small. The mechanism is thought to involve increased assembly and secretion of very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) particles, which can facilitate triglyceride clearance, but the clinical significance remains unclear.

However, the overall scientific evidence is limited and not robust. Most available studies have small sample sizes, short durations, or methodological limitations. There is insufficient high-quality, large-scale clinical trial data to support routine use of unspecified phospholipids as a primary intervention for hypertriglyceridemia. Major clinical guidelines do not currently recommend phospholipid supplementation for the management of high triglycerides. Thus, while there is a plausible biological rationale and some preliminary evidence, the use of phospholipids for this purpose is only weakly supported by science at this time.
