Palmitoleic acid is a monounsaturated omega-7 fatty acid found in some plant and animal fats, and has gained attention in recent years for its potential metabolic benefits, including effects on lipid profiles such as triglycerides. Several small clinical studies and animal experiments suggest that palmitoleic acid supplementation may help reduce serum triglyceride levels. For example, a randomized controlled trial published in the journal Lipids in Health and Disease (2015) found that supplementation with purified palmitoleic acid (as omega-7) for 30 days significantly reduced fasting triglyceride levels in overweight individuals compared to placebo. Additional studies in animal models have also shown that palmitoleic acid can decrease hepatic triglyceride synthesis and improve lipid metabolism.

However, while there is some scientific evidence supporting the use of palmitoleic acid for high triglycerides, the evidence base remains limited. Most studies are small, short-term, and sometimes industry-sponsored, and there is a lack of large-scale, long-term clinical trials. Furthermore, the mechanisms by which palmitoleic acid may exert these effects—potentially involving modulation of insulin sensitivity, inflammation, and hepatic fat metabolism—are still under investigation. Consequently, while promising, the current evidence is insufficient for strong recommendations, and palmitoleic acid should not replace established treatments for hypertriglyceridemia. More robust research is needed to clarify its effectiveness and safety for this purpose.
