Marine oil, particularly fish oil rich in omega-3 fatty acids (eicosapentaenoic acid [EPA] and docosahexaenoic acid [DHA]), is scientifically validated for lowering high triglyceride levels. Multiple randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses have demonstrated that supplementation with marine oil can significantly reduce serum triglyceride concentrations in individuals with hypertriglyceridemia. The mechanism is thought to involve decreased hepatic synthesis of triglycerides and increased clearance of triglyceride-rich lipoproteins.
The American Heart Association and other major health organizations recommend omega-3 fatty acids from marine sources as an adjunct to diet and lifestyle modification for patients with elevated triglycerides. Prescription-strength fish oil formulations containing high concentrations of EPA and/or DHA are FDA-approved for treating very high triglyceride levels (>500 mg/dL).
