Mackerel is scientifically validated as beneficial for managing high triglyceride levels. Mackerel is a rich source of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, particularly eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Numerous clinical studies have demonstrated that increasing dietary intake of omega-3 fatty acids can significantly reduce serum triglyceride concentrations. The mechanism is believed to involve reduced hepatic synthesis of triglycerides and increased clearance from plasma. Randomized controlled trials, as well as meta-analyses, have shown that both pharmaceutical and dietary sources of EPA and DHA (including fatty fish like mackerel) can lower triglycerides by 15-30% in individuals with hypertriglyceridemia. For example, a 2016 meta-analysis in the journal "Atherosclerosis" found that high-dose omega-3 supplementation (2-4g daily) significantly reduced triglyceride levels, and dietary guidance from both the American Heart Association and European Society of Cardiology recommend the consumption of oily fish such as mackerel for cardiovascular risk reduction, including the management of elevated triglycerides. While the majority of clinical trials use purified fish oil supplements, dietary intake of mackerel provides similar bioactive compounds. Therefore, the use of mackerel for supporting high triglyceride treatment is based on strong scientific evidence, particularly due to its omega-3 content.
