Lingzhi (Ganoderma lucidum), also known as reishi, has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine for promoting overall health and longevity. In recent years, scientific studies have begun to investigate its potential effects on lipid metabolism, including its role in lowering high triglyceride levels. Several preclinical studies in animals and a small number of human clinical trials suggest that lingzhi extracts may have lipid-lowering properties. These effects are thought to be mediated by triterpenoids and polysaccharides, key bioactive compounds in lingzhi, which may help modulate lipid metabolism, reduce hepatic triglyceride synthesis, and enhance lipid clearance from the bloodstream. For example, a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial published in 2011 found modest reductions in triglyceride levels among hyperlipidemic patients who consumed Ganoderma lucidum extract compared to placebo, although the differences were not statistically significant in all measured parameters. Animal studies have provided more consistent evidence, showing that lingzhi supplementation can significantly reduce triglyceride and cholesterol levels in rodent models fed high-fat diets. However, large-scale, high-quality human studies are lacking, and the current clinical evidence is limited and not robust. In summary, while there is some preliminary scientific evidence supporting the use of lingzhi for managing high triglycerides, the quality and quantity of clinical data are limited, and more research is needed to confirm its effectiveness and determine optimal dosing.
