Lecithin, a mixture of phospholipids commonly derived from soybeans or eggs, has been investigated for its potential effects on lipid profiles, including triglycerides. The rationale for its use is based on its role in lipid metabolism—phosphatidylcholine, a major component of lecithin, is essential for the transport and metabolism of fats in the body.

Some clinical studies from the late 20th century and a few small contemporary trials have suggested that lecithin supplementation might have a modest effect in lowering serum triglyceride levels. The proposed mechanism involves enhanced emulsification and transport of dietary fats, potentially reducing their accumulation in the bloodstream. However, the evidence is inconsistent and the majority of studies are either small-scale, short-term, or methodologically limited. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses have not established lecithin as an effective or reliable intervention for hypertriglyceridemia. Major clinical guidelines for managing high triglycerides do not recommend lecithin supplementation.

In summary, while there is some scientific investigation into lecithin’s impact on triglyceride levels, the quality and quantity of evidence are weak.
