Kudzu (Pueraria lobata) is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb that has been used for various cardiovascular and metabolic conditions. In recent years, scientific studies—mainly in animal models and some small human trials—have explored its potential effects on lipid metabolism, including triglyceride levels. The main active compounds in kudzu are isoflavones (such as puerarin, daidzin, and daidzein), which are thought to exert beneficial effects on lipid profiles.

Preclinical studies in rodents have shown that kudzu extracts can lower serum triglyceride and cholesterol levels, possibly by modulating hepatic lipid metabolism and enhancing antioxidant status. For instance, a 2009 study published in Phytomedicine demonstrated that administration of kudzu root extract significantly reduced triglyceride levels in hyperlipidemic rats. Proposed mechanisms include increased expression of genes involved in lipid oxidation and decreased activity of enzymes related to lipid synthesis.

Human data are limited, but a few small clinical trials have reported modest reductions in triglycerides and improvements in other lipid parameters with kudzu supplementation. Nonetheless, the quality of evidence is low, with small sample sizes and short durations. As a result, while there is some scientific basis for kudzu’s use in supporting healthy triglyceride levels, large, well-designed clinical trials are needed to confirm efficacy and safety. Currently, kudzu should not replace established medical therapies for hypertriglyceridemia but may be considered as a complementary approach in consultation with a healthcare provider.
