Krill oil is derived from tiny crustaceans called Antarctic krill and is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, primarily eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Scientific evidence supports the use of krill oil for lowering high triglyceride levels, though the strength of the evidence is moderate. Several randomized controlled trials have demonstrated that krill oil supplementation can reduce triglyceride levels in individuals with hypertriglyceridemia. For example, a 2013 study published in Lipids in Health and Disease found that participants taking krill oil experienced a significant reduction in triglyceride levels compared to placebo. The mechanism is believed to be related to the omega-3 fatty acids’ ability to decrease hepatic production of triglycerides and increase their clearance from the blood.

However, the body of evidence is smaller compared to that supporting traditional fish oil, and some studies have shown mixed results, with reductions in triglycerides being less pronounced or not statistically significant. Meta-analyses generally suggest a beneficial effect, but more large-scale, long-term studies are needed for definitive conclusions. Overall, krill oil appears to be a scientifically validated, though not first-line, option for triglyceride reduction, with a moderate evidence base consisting primarily of small clinical trials.
