Green tea antioxidants, particularly catechins like epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), have been studied for their effects on lipid metabolism, including triglyceride levels. Several randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses have investigated green tea extract or catechin supplementation in individuals with elevated blood lipids. Results suggest a modest, but statistically significant, reduction in triglyceride levels with green tea supplementation. For example, a 2011 meta-analysis in the journal Obesity Reviews found that green tea catechins led to small reductions in triglycerides among overweight and obese individuals. Another 2020 meta-analysis in Phytotherapy Research reported a significant triglyceride-lowering effect of green tea supplementation, particularly at higher doses and longer intervention periods.

The mechanisms proposed include increased fat oxidation, reduced absorption of dietary fat, and improved hepatic lipid metabolism. However, the magnitude of the effect is generally modest—typically a reduction of 5–15 mg/dL—and may not be clinically meaningful for all individuals. Furthermore, study heterogeneity (differences in doses, duration, and study populations) exists, and not all trials find significant benefits.

In summary, while green tea antioxidants are not a primary treatment for high triglycerides, there is moderate scientific evidence supporting a small triglyceride-lowering effect, mainly as an adjunct to other lifestyle interventions.
