Flavanones are a subclass of flavonoids predominantly found in citrus fruits, with hesperidin, naringenin, and eriocitrin being notable examples. There is a growing body of scientific literature investigating the effects of flavanones on lipid metabolism, including serum triglyceride levels. Several animal studies and small human trials have suggested that flavanone-rich extracts or supplements can reduce triglyceride concentrations, likely through mechanisms involving modulation of lipid metabolism and enhancement of antioxidant defenses. For example, naringenin has been shown in both animal and some human studies to improve dyslipidemia by activating peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs), which play key roles in lipid metabolism. Hesperidin supplementation has demonstrated modest reductions in serum triglycerides in some randomized controlled trials, particularly in populations at risk for metabolic syndrome.
However, while these findings are promising, the overall quality and size of the clinical evidence remain moderate. Many studies are limited by small sample sizes, short durations, and variability in dosing and formulation. Meta-analyses and systematic reviews typically conclude that there is a potential benefit, but also emphasize the need for larger, well-designed human trials to confirm efficacy and establish optimal dosing. Thus, the use of flavanones for high triglycerides is supported by scientific evidence, but the evidence is not yet robust enough for broad clinical recommendations.
