Flavanones, a subclass of flavonoids primarily found in citrus fruits (such as hesperidin and naringenin), have been studied for their potential effects on lipid metabolism, including triglyceride levels. Scientific evidence suggests that certain flavanones may help reduce high triglycerides, though the evidence is moderate and mostly derived from animal studies and some small clinical trials.

Several preclinical studies have demonstrated that flavanones can modulate lipid metabolism by influencing enzymes involved in fatty acid synthesis and oxidation. For example, naringenin has been shown to decrease hepatic triglyceride production and improve lipid profiles in rodent models. Some of the mechanisms proposed include downregulation of genes involved in triglyceride synthesis and enhancement of fatty acid oxidation.

Human studies are limited but promising. A few randomized controlled trials have investigated the effects of citrus flavanone supplementation on lipid profiles in individuals with metabolic syndrome or hyperlipidemia. These studies report modest reductions in serum triglycerides after supplementation with hesperidin or naringin, often in the context of a broader improvement in metabolic markers. However, the sample sizes are small, and the duration of intervention is generally short.

Overall, while there is scientific interest and some supportive data for the use of flavanones in lowering triglycerides, the current level of evidence is moderate. Larger and longer-term human trials are needed to confirm efficacy and establish dosing guidelines.
