Flavanols, a class of polyphenolic compounds found abundantly in foods such as cocoa, tea, apples, and berries, have been studied for their potential cardiovascular benefits, including effects on blood lipid profiles such as triglycerides. While there is some scientific interest in their role in modulating lipid metabolism, the evidence specifically supporting flavanols for reducing high triglyceride levels is modest and mixed.
A number of clinical trials and meta-analyses have investigated the impact of flavanol-rich foods and extracts on triglyceride concentrations. Some studies have reported minor reductions in triglyceride levels following regular consumption of flavanol-rich cocoa or tea, but these changes are generally small and not consistently observed across all trials. The primary mechanisms proposed include improved endothelial function, antioxidant activity, and possible modulation of lipid absorption and metabolism. However, other studies have found no significant effect of flavanol supplementation on triglyceride levels, and the overall quality of evidence is limited by small sample sizes, short intervention durations, and heterogeneity in study design and flavanol sources.
Major clinical guidelines do not currently recognize flavanols as a standard treatment for high triglycerides, and while they may offer general cardiovascular benefits as part of a healthy diet, their specific effect on triglyceride lowering is not robustly established. Therefore, scientific evidence exists but is considered weak to moderate and insufficient for clinical recommendations.
